Entertaiment is any activity that diverts or amuses people during their leisure time. People can create their own entertainment, such as spontaneously inventing a game; participate actively in an entertaining activity, such as playing sport as a hobby; or consume an entertainment product passively, such as attending a performance. People may also use stories to entertain themselves. For example, the story of Scheherazade, from the Persian professional storytelling tradition, has been retold many times in different media: composers Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski created musical works; director Pasolini made a film adaptation; and game designers have developed innovative video games. The word entertainment is sometimes abbreviated entmt, especially on fliers for industry news publications and in short hand note taking.
